Guinea Pig Diet: Seeds & Dried Herbs
shares
What do guinea pigs actually eat?
A look into the bowl β and into the Andes. πΉπΏ
When we think of guinea pigs, we usually picture cute furry friends happily scurrying around their enclosure or contentedly nibbling on a hay pile. But did you know where they come from?
Our domestic guinea pigs originally hail from South and Central America β more precisely, from the highlands of Peru and the Andean region. There, their wild ancestors live in dry grasslands, surrounded by an incredible variety of grasses, herbs, leaves, and plant seeds. And it was precisely this plant diversity that provided them with everything they needed to live: vitamins, minerals, secondary plant compounds β everything was right under their noses. πΎ
Today, our guinea pigs no longer live in Peru (as much of a shame as that sometimes is π), but with us β and that means we are responsible for putting together the best possible diet for them.
Why food is so important
Guinea pigs cannot produce their own vitamin C β they must get it daily through their food. Depending on their age and condition, they need between 5 and 20 milligrams of vitamin C per day. If this vitamin is consistently lacking, serious health problems can arise. That's why a well-thought-out feeding plan is so crucial!
But don't worry β you don't need to be a nutritionist. A few basic rules and the right instincts are enough to provide good care for your animals. π
This is what the ideal diet looks like:
Daily essentials (in the enclosure or on the plate):
β
Fresh hay β available 24/7
β
Green fodder β fresh leaves, herbs, wild plants
β
Vegetables and some fruit β a colorful mix
β
Branches β for nibbling & dental care
β
Herbs β fresh or dried
β
Seeds & grains β for energy and vital nutrients
The combination is key! Only through variety do the animals get all the different nutrients they truly need to stay healthy.
A word on dried herbs
I recommend:
π 1 teaspoon of dried herbs per animal β twice a week
Dried herbs contain extremely high levels of minerals. That's why they are so valuable β but also so concentrated. Too much can quickly lead to bladder grit or even bladder stones.
Other types of food also require moderation:
β‘οΈ Too much lettuce? Leads to mushy droppings.
β‘οΈ Fresh herbs from the supermarket? Often full of bacteria due to long transport routes.
My tip: I feed dried herbs in addition to fresh ones β so my guinea pigs can decide for themselves what they need.
π± A word on seeds
Perhaps you've already guessed: Seeds are an often underestimated but incredibly important part of a guinea pig's diet.
Why? Because they contain high-quality fats, proteins, trace elements, and minerals β exactly what their small bodies urgently need, especially during stressful periods, when shedding fur, or in winter.
In nature, guinea pigs would naturally encounter seeds β with us, we have to consciously supplement them. But don't worry: it's not about "a lot," but about "the right amount."
That's why you'll find specially formulated seed mixes in my shop β seasonal, balanced, and of course, tested by my own furry friends. π
What I've learned β and why I want to share it
I've (seemingly) endlessly researched, tried, adjusted, compared, combined β until I really got the feeding right for my own large group of guinea pigs. And I can honestly say:
π It was more than worth it!
The animals are fit, happy, lively β and I have far fewer food-related problems than many owners report in Facebook groups & forums.
And that's exactly why I want to share my knowledge β with you, with everyone who loves these small, wonderful creatures as much as I do.
Conclusion: Good nutrition = healthy guinea pigs
Of course, many factors play a role in guinea pig husbandry. But nutrition is paramount β just as it is for us humans. And with a little knowledge, attention, and love, so much good can be done. πΉπ
